ABOUT PAUL BERRY

Chartered Geotechnical Engineer with over 19 years experience AtkinsI joined Atkins in 2007, following three years with Gifford (now Ramboll). In my early years with Atkins I held site-based roles M25 DBFO, Olympic Park enabling works, gaining practical experience of communicating with client’s, contractors and designers, and overcoming challenges through intelligent design and good co-operation. I have used this to great effect when leading geotechnical teams to deliver technically challenging projects. This was demonstrated when I led the Crag End Landslide stabilisation project team which won the ICE Robert Stephenson Award and the BGA Fleming Award in 2016.Managed multi-disciplinary projects and I was Atkins’ Project manager for the Gedling Access Road Project. Managed the commercial and contractual risks that are inherent with the project’s technical challenges which include constructing a road embankment over an infilled railway cutting which was used as a domestic waste site.Played a pro-active role in establishing a flow of work to the Newcastle Office from a range of local clients; mostly local authorities. I have done this through a natural desire to understand my client’s needs and delivering bespoke offerings. Grew the Geotechnical team in Newcastle. Both capable of leading teams through a design and taking my place within a team. Worked with a wide range of clients and stakeholders to meet each individual project needs to scope, manage, procure, review, administrate and oversee project delivery. Also worked client-side in secondment positions, procuring projects and providing inhouse advice. Although currently based in the North East of England, I have worked on projects across both the UK and overseas throughout my career and built effective, long-term relationships with clients both in the UK and internationally.Good external profile, and I have given several technical presentations in the North East, which show-case my geotechnical capabilities. In regular contact with academia at both Newcastle and Teesside University providing industry support and guidance to MSc students. I sit on the committee of the ICE’s Northern Geotechnical Group.
