About Paul Bello

My interests lie at the interface of the philosophy of psychology, the philosophy of mind and computation. My primary research trajectory is aimed toward computationally exploring questions about responsibility as it applies to artificial agents. Specifically, I am seeking to identify and close various gaps between how the notion of \"agent\" is used in the AI community, and how it is used among philosophers of action, ethicists, and those in the policy community who now face difficult questions about human-machine teams. Central to these investigations is the idea that attention and control of attention is at the heart of our richest characterizations of human agency and ought to be foundational for the development of any artificial systems that might eventually be characterized as an agent in the usual sense. To this end, along with Dr. Will Bridewell, I have co-developed the ARCADIA attention-centric cognitive system and have been co-directing a corresponding research program since 2014.I recieved B.S. degrees in Computer Engineering and Philosophy in an M.S. in Computer Science in 2001, and the Ph.D. in Cognitive Science in 2005 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY. From 2002 through 2007 I worked as a computer scientist for the Air Force Research Laboratory\'s Information Directorate in Rome, NY. From 2007 through 2014 I directed the Cognitive Science and Human-Autonomy Interaction programs at the Office of Naval Research as part of the Warfighter Performance and Protections Department. Since 2014, I have served as the head of the Interactive Systems Section of the AI Center at the Naval Research Laboratory where I direct the ARCADIA research group.Specialties: Artificial intelligence, computational cognitive modeling, contract management, technology investment planning
