ABOUT PAUL ADDISON
My role as Chief Scientist for the Medtronic Patient Monitoring division involves partnering across R&D communities within and outside of the organization, delivering scientific engagement, rigor, mentoring, and communities of practice across our Patient Monitoring products and technologies. I am a Senior Distinguished Scientist and Bakken Fellow at Medtronic with over 170 granted US patents in biomedical engineering. I am also heavily involved in our biosignal, video biosignal and AI algorithm groups as well as undertaking AI landscaping and IP generation activities in our space.My biosignal experience is wide ranging and includes expertise across signals such as ECG, EEG, EMG, PPG, PCG, ETCO2, TCD, BP and more – and physiological parameters, including: respiratory rate & effort, oxygen saturation (arterial and regional), cerebral blood flow, heart rate, HRV & rhythm metrics, shock response during CPR, fluid responsiveness, nociception, cerebral autoregulation, ocular microtremors, patient activity & alarm management. Recent years have seen a major departure into video and depth sensing modalities for the non-contact ‘touchless’ monitoring of patient physiological and contextual information.In a previous life I was the CEO of start-up company, CardioDigital Ltd which I co-founded in 2002 (and later its US subsidiary, CardioDigital Inc). We developed a range of novel algorithms for ECG and pulse oximeter signals and went on to acquire continuous non-invasive blood pressure (CNIBP) IP from a Canadian Company. I joined Covidien (now Medtronic) when it acquired CardioDigital’s IP portfolio in 2008. … and way back I was a tenured professor of fluids engineering with over 200 academic papers and two text books (wavelet transforms & fractals/nonlinear dynamics). I am a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Physics in the UK.My core skill is out-of-the-box thinking for biosignal algorithm design closely aligned with an awareness of clinician needs in order to produce robust, reliable monitoring devices that meet business requirements.
