About Patrick Nelson
Over the last 12 years, I have built and led high-impact career ecosystems that align students, institutions, and industry. My work sits at the intersection of higher education strategy, employer engagement, and talent development supporting undergraduate and graduate students, as well as mid-level and senior professionals navigating growth, transition, and reinvention. As the inaugural Director of Career Services within the College of Management, I’m building a comprehensive, industry-aligned career services model serving 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students. This includes designing scalable advising structures, cultivating strategic employer partnerships, embedding career readiness into the academic experience, and creating high-touch engagement opportunities that translate into measurable outcomes. In addition to student development, I advise alumni and experienced professionals on advancement, pivot, and executive-level career strategy. I operate with a dual lens: individual advocacy and institutional advancement. My experience spans professional sports, nonprofit leadership, higher education administration, and corporate settings. Across each environment, my approach remains consistent: listen empathetically, understand complex stakeholder goals, and build partnerships rooted in trust, transparency, and long-term value creation.Higher education and corporate recruiting are undergoing significant transformation. Employer expectations are shifting. Talent pipelines are evolving. Professionals across career stages are rethinking mobility and purpose. I see this moment not as disruption, but as an opportunity to redesign how institutions and industry collaborate to develop intentional, data-informed, and equity-centered talent pathways. My work focuses on strengthening these bridges through strategic employer engagement, outcome tracking, market analysis, and innovative programming that meets both student aspirations and workforce demand. At my core, I build relationships and systems that work for all backgrounds, combining emotional intelligence with operational rigor, and strategic vision with practical execution.Core Areas of Expertise:Career Services Strategy & Office LeadershipEmployer & Industry Partnership DevelopmentTalent Development & Career Mobility StrategyStudent & Alumni Career AdvancementData-Informed Programming & Performance MetricsCorporate Engagement & Brand AlignmentCross-Functional Leadership & Stakeholder CollaborationEquity-Centered Workforce DevelopmentRecruitment Strategy & Process Optimization
Experience
Director, Career Services
Umass Boston - College Of Management
Feb 2024 — Present · Boston, MA, US
As the inaugural Director of Career Services for the College of Management, I built and now lead a comprehensive career development office serving more than undergraduate and graduate business students. I established the strategic vision, infrastructure, and programming from the ground up, creating a scalable model that integrates advising, employer engagement, and career readiness across the student lifecycle.I advise more than 200 students each semester on career strategy, internship and job search preparation, and professional development while designing high-impact workshops and events focused on personal branding, interviewing, and industry engagement.A core focus of my work is strengthening partnerships between the College of Management and industry. I lead employer engagement initiatives connecting students with firms across consulting, accounting, finance, and technology, while collaborating with faculty to embed career readiness into coursework. I also launched signature programs, including a Mock Interview & Networking Night, Annual Etiquette Dinner, and our Employer Trek Series that have significantly expanded student participation and employer visibility.
