ABOUT PATRICK MASON

I\'m currently Senior Legal Counsel in Experian\'s Regulatory Legal team, supporting our Consumer, Identity and Fraud, and Data businesses. My role is varied - covering data privacy (UK and EU GDPR), all aspects of consumer financial services (including FCA regulation, the Consumer Credit Act/CONC regime), alongside complementary regimes such as Competition, Equality and Consumer Rights.My previous roles include - Senior Compliance Manager, working in Tesco Bank’s Policy and Oversight team, part of the second line Compliance and Conduct Risk team, reporting into the Head of Policy and Oversight and Compliance Director. I manager a team of Compliance Managers charged with providing second line risk oversight across all areas of the Bank, with a focus on regulatory compliance, conduct and customer outcomes. The team’s work involves assurance oversight, as well as effectiveness reviews and policy compliance- Senior Legal Counsel, looking after Tesco Bank’s Customer and Product Legal team, reporting into the Head of Legal and the Legal Director. I managed a team of lawyers, of varying seniority (entirely remotely since March 2020).I have a consistent track record of team leadership – I encourage my team to be accountable, empowered, and continually developing. I look for efficiencies and improvements and I prioritise stakeholder management. I foster a culture of “early engagement” – proactive, not reactive.My role is one of “trusted advisor” – I am an experienced financial services compliance professional, with in-depth specialist knowledge of data privacy/consumer credit/payment services, with significant experience of delivering high-risk advice across multiple strategic projects.I understand business strategy and direction, which helps me advise more effectively. I am influential at all levels, and adept at establishing strong relationships with stakeholders. I try to get under the skin of a business, and understand why they do what they do, and how they operate.As an out and visible gay man, I see it as my responsibility to drive forward equality, diversity and inclusion.
