About Patrick Tyrrell
I’ve been interested in technology and science since I was young, an interest brought on by my father, who worked as a NASA engineer and program manager for the Apollo 13 lunar module. I grew up around engineers at the Johnson Space Center, watching them plan for every scenario they could anticipate and develop better solutions when the unexpected hit under urgent, even life-threatening conditions. It taught me that no problem is unsolvable if you stay curious and steady.I started in UNIX, MAC, Windows Administration, and technical support roles, learning how systems and teams operate. I felt driven in roles that involved solving technical problems while building the teams and processes that prevent them in the first place.Since then, I’ve led internal IT organizations across diverse industries. At Cooley LLP, I led significant renovations of the tech infrastructure in every office, including international sites, and launched the firm’s first full-spectrum technology training program. At athenahealth, I rebuilt a fractured IT organization into a unified, high-performing team and improved infrastructure and cybersecurity across the board. One of our biggest tests came during COVID-19 when we transitioned the entire company to remote work over a weekend without disruption. I also led the complex buildout of an independent IT infrastructure for the company’s innovation center and clinic while creating a secure remote access environment for thousands of offshore BPO partners, ensuring access while maintaining strict data privacy compliance. In recent years, I’ve worked in fractional CIO roles with small and mid-sized businesses across New England. I’ve helped teams prepare for and recover from cybersecurity incidents and manage significant transitions like ERP implementations and cloud migrations.Earlier in my career, I led global endpoint infrastructure at Bose and used Lean Six Sigma to lead large-scale process improvements. At Haemonetics, I negotiated vendor contracts that saved significant costs and redesigned the support model to better serve global teams. At Bingham McCutchen, I helped unify a geographically scattered support model across six offices into a single enterprise structure and spent eight years building and leading internal IT support. What connects all of this is my love for behind-the-scenes work. Infrastructure and operations might not make headlines, but they’re essential. Technology will only continue to evolve, and I’m excited to keep growing with it, helping others build stronger systems and a brighter future.
