About Patrick Brant

With over 38 years of expertise in polyolefins research and development, I specialize in olefin polymerization catalysis, structure-property relationships, and advanced product design for applications ranging from packaging to lithium ion batteries, to automotive. My work has facilitated the commercialization of groundbreaking products like Exact, Exceed, and Enable metallocene polyethylenes, contributing to substantial annual sales. Extensive experience with an array of characterization tools, such as NMR, DSC, LVSEM, ME-GPC, FTIR, XPS and static and dynamic SIMS, ensures thorough multi-dimensional material analysis leading and deeper understanding of design for use. Currently, I can share that I am- collaborating with Baylor University and others to pioneer utility of Proxxima ROMP technology for oil and gas applications, including well-plugging solutions for both dormant and active wells- starting a new company, Molecular Joinery, based on novel coupling agents for composites and nanocomposites, as well as coatings- advising a Canadian startup, A2O, focused on catalytic hydroalkylamination- providing expert witness services- collaborating on basic research at University of Houston

37 years experience in polyolefins structure-property relationships - solid and melt state - polyolefin blends, including impact copolymers synthesis of new polyolefins; versatile functionalization of same - lab to scale-up and commercialization homogeneous and heterogeneous polyolefin catalysis markets, applications - packaging, automotive, adhesives, oil additives solving plant and customer problems separator design, fabrication for lithium ion batteries - consumer electronics - larger format designs targeting transportation - 2008 ICIS product innovation awardInput, guidance, and stewardship on ExxonMobil R&D portfolio related to polyolefinsProgram initiation, management, team leadershipAuthor or co-author over 60 publications and over 120 granted US PatentsInvited speaker academic and industrial formatsMass media communication experience - over 25 interviews with print and tv media - one commercial - Speakers Coalition; ExxonMobil speaker at internal and external functionsCo-organizer ISPAC 2015, June 6-9, 2015, Houston, TxNew Publication: “Linear rheology and structure of molecular bottlebrushes with very short side chains” López-Barrón, C. R; Brant, P; Eberle, A. P. R; Crowther, D. C. J Rheology 2015, 59, 865-883.Current interests: demonstration of new patented coupling agent design for composites and nano-compositeshigh throughput methodology for study of polymer grafting to inorganic or other hard substratesuse of Grubbs type ROMP chemistry for oil field-downhole applications; two most prominent are (1) plugging abandoned wells using ROMP instead of (or in addition to) cement (2) back-up for control of blow-outs (off shore focus), esp where BOP failure can be remedied long enough to re-gain well control.
