About Pat Tanumihardja

After more than two decades of writing in different capacities, my stories covering a variety of topics from food, travel, home and garden, diversity issues, and the arts, have been published in regional, national and international publications, both in print and online. As a food writer, I\'ve covered the Asian-American food scene in-depth, contributed to a guidebook, reviewed restaurants, profiled chefs and food artisans, developed recipes, spotted trends, and much more. Now that I\'m mom to a multi-cultural son, I also write about family-centric food topics. I\'ve won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists’ Pacific Northwest chapter, the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, and IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals). My first cookbook \"The Asian Grandmothers Cookbook-Home Cooking from Asian American Kitchens\" was published in October 2009 and the paperback was released in August 2012. My fifth and latest co-written with my mother Juliana Suparman,\"Mortar and Pestle-Classic Indonesian Recipes for the Modern Kitchen\" was published in September 2024.I\'m an expert on pan-Asian cuisine and ingredients, with a special interest in the foods of Southeast Asia, in particular the foods of my childhood-Singapore and Indonesia. I\'m also passionate about adapting Asian flavors and traditional recipes to make them accessible for the American cook while respecting elements of both cultures. To help those needing a little guidance navigating the aisles of an Asian market, I created the \"Asian Ingredients 101\" app, which will be re-launched soon.In the children\'s publishing realm, I develop recipes for Highlights High Five magazine. In addition, I have 3 published picture books and one more releasing in December 2025.I\'ve lived on 3 continents, traveled extensively and I speak 4 languages. I pride myself in writing stories through this multicultural lens. Plus, as an immigrant twice over, I have the sensibilities to connect with a wide range of people, places, and cultures.
