Experience
Standards Strategist Assigned to Meta
Feb 2024 — Present · Sunnyvale, CA, US
After 15 years with Dolby in the CTO Office, I retired in November 2023. In my most recent role as Technology, Standards, and Industry Engagement Vice President, I played an important role in defining key parts of Dolby\'s technology strategy. Always working across the right set of people in the company and industry, I made many notable contributions – including helping to establish Dolby Vision, getting all the studios on board and coining the phrase “better pixels” for HDR & Wide Color Gamut. I also chaired the SMPTE ST 2084 drafting group that standardized the Perceptual Quantizer “PQ” Curve and joined-the-dots to make the ecosystem work. I held many leadership roles while at Dolby including SMPTE President and SMPTE Fellow. I recently served as President and Vice President of the Ultra-HD Forum as well as Dolby’s Board representative in the UHD Alliance, and Chair of its Interoperability Working Group. While I will be giving up some of these posts, I remain passionate about “paying it forward” and will stay active with the local SMPTE chapter and SMPTE student members as well as on the Board of the California State University Entertainment Alliance (CSUEA) which supports media programs for all 23 Cal State Universities. I remain an invited member of the IBC Council, a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Technical Emmy Committee, as well as a member of the CTA’s Academy of Digital TV Pioneers. I often quip “Life is the leading cause of death”, but in addition to paying it forward, I intend to stay active in the industry and have recently taken on a consulting position of strategist at Meta in Sunnyvale to help with their standards plans.It\'s been a wild but amazing journey helping Dolby transition into the world of HDR and I am grateful for successes and friendships I have made in the process.
