ABOUT PASQUALE FRANCIOSA

Pasquale Franciosa is Professor and Head of the Laser Beam Welding Group at WMG, the University of Warwick. His focus is on the improvement of the understanding of laser-to-material interaction, development of novel welding strategies to process similar and dissimilar materials, and deployment of smart systems powered by applications of machine learning/artificial intelligence and multi-disciplinary optimisation. Associate partner of the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “Lasers4NetZero”, that aims at establishing an innovative training and research programme across UK-EU-Africa focusing on laser material processing (laser beam shaping and high-speed scanners for welding and cutting), artificial intelligence for quality control, advanced process simulation and predictive lifecycle and sustainability analysis for EV manufacturing. Project Coordinator of the Horizon Europe “Lasers4MaaS” project for revolutionising laser welding by dynamic beam shaping and digital technologies for servitisation of manufacturing. In 2010 PhD in Mechanical Engineering Systems at the University of Naples Federico II discussing the thesis on dimensional control of autobody structures. Prior to that Teaching Assistant at MIT (Boston - USA) undertaking research on robotics, motion and constraint analysis. In 2007 Visiting Scholar at the Institut Supérieur de Mécanique de Paris – SUPMECA (Paris - France) working on modelling and simulation of sheet-metal assembly deformations. Published 100+ papers, received five best-paper awards and one industrial award for his work on remote laser welding of aluminium panels. His collaborative result-driven approach has consistently promoted reputation and trust across a strong network of collaborators. This has attracted collaborative research grants with a range of industry partners and large OEMs, in addition to significant in-kind contributions and knowledge transfer partnerships with UK SMEs. The breadth of industry applications includes automotive and aerospace.
