ABOUT PANAMA JACKSON

My 16-plus years as an award-winning writer with VerySmartBrothas along with my experience writing about race, pop culture, identity and entertainment for various outlets from The Washington Post to CafeMom and WEtv especially situates me as an individual with a unique perspective in the areas of culture and identity and also speaks to my work ethic and ability to deliver frequent, high quality work.In my role as Senior Editor, along with providing daily editorial content that put a lens on whatever was happening in the pop-culture zeitgeist, I was specifically in charge of curating content and series that provided fresh looks at the intersection of pop culture, entertainment and identity. I spearheaded and curated a week-long multi-media series called “The Black Mainstream” that invited writers to delve into an aspect of Black pop culture that they found most personal and essential to their own lives. In late 2020, I curated a series about mental health titled “Quiet Storm,” that tasked several writers to be vulnerable enough to discuss mental health discussions in the Black community as well as their own relationship with mental health battles. In 2019, I initiated a series titled “America. In Black.” that provided a unique view at individual experiences of Black people in America; one piece in that series—“All The Ways I Did Not Die,” written by Michael Harriot—won the National Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Award for Best Commentary/Weblog at the 2019 NABJ annual conference.
