A global health care transformation is underway. Interventions that are doctor-driven and manage disease are giving way to consumer-centric, preventative approaches that promote lasting behaviour change. Empowered consumers are demanding, and thus driving, this shift. Equipped with better information, these consumers want more control of their care – and they want it to be convenient, affordable and personalized. In addition, new technologies are redefining not only what kind of care is delivered but how and where such care is offered. The move to anytime anywhere care promises to reduce health costs, while improving quality and outcomes. The rise of the empowered consumer, coupled with advancements in technology and the emergence of digitally-focused entrants, is shifting power away from payers, providers, and Life Sciences companies to new organizations in the ecosystem. As a result, how health care services are delivered will gradually, and then suddenly, change. Increasingly, value will be created by platforms that connect, combine and share data to improve outcomes for all. To retain relevancy in this environment, traditional health organizations must rethink every aspect of the business, from capital strategy, to partnering with different stakeholders, to creating focused, patient-centric operating models.
