Coaching4Change (C4C) is a near-peer mentoring program designed to accelerate learning by employing talented, racially diverse College Mentors to provide academic, social, and emotional support to K-12 students in underserved school districts. This unique mentor/student relationship delivers proven results as demonstrated by improved student engagement, attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. Participating schools report that 80% of students had improved attendance, 79% improved behaviorally, and 83% improved academically. C4C’s model is straightforward: Professional educators (the Coaches) supervise college students (the Mentors) who in turn mentor/coach the K-12 students. The mentors are typically closer in age to the mentees (near-peer) than more experienced educators, often coming from similar communities and sharing common life experiences. The College Mentors’ ability to relate and form bonds with their mentees is key to the program’s remarkable impact. Programming at each school is co-designed with school leadership and C4C staff to meet the specific needs of each school community. College Mentors serve in a variety of roles including academic support, enrichment leaders, lunch buddies, SEL (social-emotional learning), mentors, project-based learning facilitators, Physical Education, and Enrichment support. The power of mentoring is embedded in C4C’s origins. As a graduate student, Marquis Taylor was a Fellow for Project Coach, a community outreach program that trained at-risk high school students to become sports coaches for community youth. This experience led Marquis to reflect on the impact that mentors had on his own development growing up as a child in South-Central Los Angeles and inspired him to establish Coaching for Change in 2010. Marquis’s own life experience is the catalyzing force that drives C4C.
