Be careful what topic you pick for your graduate thesis. It just might become your life’s work! In 1987, my thesis demonstrated that insurance companies were limiting what social services could be provided because many were considered too “risky” to insure. Services for troubled kids, homeless shelters, after school programs, senior services, day care and a lot more were curtailed or eliminated because they couldn’t get insurance. I proposed that nonprofits come together and create their own insurance company. Then, everyone looked at me to make it happen!Nearly 30 years later, the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance insures nearly other nonprofits. We are cooperatives, owned and governed by other 501(c)(3) nonprofits and we are a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit ourselves. In addition to providing insurance, we offer lots of free training and educational services. With assets of nearly $500 million and an A (Excellent) rating from AM Best, we are now a mid-sized insurance group. Along the way, we have diverted more than $200 million that would have become insurance company profits, back into community service through dividends to our member nonprofits. More at addition to this work, I am on the board of directors of American Nonprofits, which is working hard to increase access to credit for nonprofits, in much the same way the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group has improved access to insurance for nonprofits.
