ABOUT PAIGE M. K. LARKIN

I am the Program Officer, Clinical Microbiology at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). With years of laboratory director experience, I am passionate about contributing broadly to the field of clinical microbiology, further improving patient care. I am particularly interested in increasing access to accurate and timely diagnostics and address this through my work in policy and advocacy, laboratory equity, coding and reimbursement, and laboratory practices. To address these challenges, I am actively leading several collaborations with external organizations and work with directors and laboratories around the world. Education, Credentials & Previous Experience: I was a CPEP Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 20••••20. My education includes a PhD in Experimental Pathology and Masters in Biological Sciences from the University of Virginia School of Medicine as well as a Bachelors in Biology from Cornell University. I hold active American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) certification, microbiology ASCP technologist license (M(ASCP)), and California State Microbiologist certification. I previously directed a molecular microbiology laboratory that serviced the Chicagoland area (20••••23), where I developed diagnostic assays, collaborated with other hospital teams (e.g, hospital infection prevention, pharmacy, infectious disease, pediatrics), engaged the local community through active engagement opportunities, oversaw laboratory testing for all infectious disease tests and ensured that results were accurate, served as a clinical consultant for providers, performed and published research, taught residents, fellows, and laboratory technologists, and identify areas for process improvement, including diagnostic stewardship. My expertise includes next generation sequencing (NGS), molecular diagnostics, virology, and mycology. I have extensive experience in developing, evaluating, verifying/validating, and implementing molecular assays for clinical care, resulting in the use of several new clinical assays in the past two years and multiple publications.
