About Padma Nanaware
My research is all about cracking the code of how our immune systems actually \"see\" disease. I use mass spectrometry to identify the specific peptides that MHC molecules naturally process and present – think of these as the molecular snapshots that diseased cells show to immune cells, essentially saying \"something\'s wrong here.\"What fascinates me is how this cellular communication changes when things go awry. I\'ve been building pipelines to decode these complex conversations, especially focusing on how post-translational modifications alter the messages cells send during disease. Recently, I\'ve been mapping these immunopeptidomes across different tissues – from thymus to dendritic cells to splenic B cells – and in diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer\'s, Parkinson\'s, and ALS.The bigger picture I\'m chasing is understanding why diseases affect people so differently. I\'m combining immunopeptidome data with transcriptomics and T-cell responses to get a fuller picture of what\'s really happening. This disease heterogeneity puzzle has been bugging the field for years – why do some patients respond to treatments while others don\'t? If we can figure out these patterns, we could revolutionize how we find biomarkers and develop targeted therapies for cancer, autoimmune diseases, and infections.
