About Paddy Ssentongo

Dr. Paddy Ssentongo is a physician–scientist at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor at Penn State College of Medicine. He is completing fellowship training in Infectious Diseases, with a research focus on HIV + aging, metabolomic age gap, and neurocognitive outcomes, leveraging machine learning to integrate brain imaging, biomarkers, and neuropsychological assessments into predictive models that guide actionable interventions. His broader clinical research portfolio centers on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of infectious causes of brain disorders (NeuroID), including post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, and other neuroinfectious complications. Dr. Ssentongo pioneered the first murine models of epilepsy following malaria infection and Paenibacillus thiaminolyticus–associated postinfectious hydrocephalus. His work spans global health, dissecting the intersection of infectious diseases with malnutrition, immune aging, and inflammation.Methodologically, he incorporates spatial epidemiology, predictive modeling, machine learning, meta-analyses, and precision public health approaches. His findings have informed World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations and have been featured in outlets such as US News & World Report, Reuters, WebMD, The Hill, Yahoo News, and Penn State News.A dedicated mentor, Dr. Ssentongo actively trains undergraduates, medical students, residents, and fellows in study design, statistical programming (R, SAS, Shiny Apps), machine learning applications, spatial analysis, and scholarly writing. Many of his mentees have gone on to publish as first authors in high-impact journals including JAMA Network Open, BMJ Open, and Scientific Reports.
