Since 2016, Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (RR-SMR) has partnered with Laing O\'Rourke to develop an innovative solution aimed at powering up to one million homes per reactor. This collaboration includes the creation of a Civils Kit of Parts (CKoP) and the development of a digital strategy to streamline the construction of SMRs, ensuring they are built more efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively through continuous improvement.A critical step in the process was obtaining accreditation to ISO 19650, a key requirement for the Great British Nuclear (GBN) SMR procurement. While RR-SMR had a clear vision for utilizing BIM Information Management standards, there were gaps that needed to be addressed. I was seconded to RR-SMR in March 2024 as Digital Engineering Lead, where I led the effort to implement ISO 19650 and enhance their information management processes.My role involved:• Leading a small team focused on achieving ISO 19650 accreditation within a tight nine-month timeframe.• Upskilling the team to ensure a unified understanding of what ISO19650 requires and how accreditation would be achieved.• Analysing RR-SMR’s existing workflows and identifying necessary adaptations to align with ISO standards.• Developing critical documentation to ensure seamless integration of ISO 19650 requirements into existing processes.• Through close collaboration with BSi, we implemented a ‘sandbox project’ that demonstrated the new processes, stakeholder interactions, and the documentation that would support the transition. This was implemented within Siemens Teamcenter, which is set to become the “Central Source of Truth” for RR-SMR in 2025.I’m proud to share that the accreditation was achieved ahead of schedule, with BSI recommending approval just seven months after the project commenced. Moving forward, my team is focused on embedding these processes as the standard operating model for RR-SMR, ensuring continued success and efficiency across the project.
