ABOUT PACHAMUTHU BALAKRISHNAN
Involved in infectious diseases research for more than 25 years (21 years at YRG Centre for AIDS Research and Education https://yrgcare.org/) and undergone laboratory training in CDC, Atlanta, USA and several USA universities including Johns Hopkins University, Brown University, Emory University, Stanford University, Rush University, Duke University and New York University School of Medicine. My major research thematic areas have been sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, TB, viral hepatitis and COVID-19. I have over 15 years of experience in human clinical trials (phase 3 and phase 4) and basic science research in infectious diseases, most of which were sponsored by NIH (USA). I also served as Specialty HIV Genotyping Laboratory Director and Site Principal Investigator of the international Regional TB Diagnostic Laboratory (RTBDL) which was sponsored by the NIH/DAIDS/ACTG to support TB related scientific agenda of the international network study protocols. I have contributed to the development of international (World Health Organization, WHO) and national (National AIDS Control Organization, NACO) laboratory diagnostic and quality guidelines. In the past 2 decades I have been organizing an international scientific event on regular basis and this includes Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) Workshop on international standards, ISO15189:2012/2022 and International Science Symposium/Conference on HIV & Infectious Diseases. Published about 150 research articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals including Lancet, Nature, AIDS, Journal of AIDS, International Journal of Infectious Diseases, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Journal of Infectious Diseases, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology and Antiviral Therapy. Also serving as a reviewer for several reputed national and international journals. I have good experience in networking the collaborators in-country and international institutions for the research and development. Successfully completed several research projects funded by international (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USA; World Bank, USA; USAIDS, USA and NIH, USA) and national agencies (ICMR and DBT).
