About Pablo Miró Vázquez

I have always been fascinated by how things are made, by the detail and beauty of well-made things. I have an insatiable curiosity about how things work. I still spend many hours taking things apart and trying to put them back together again. The opportunity to solve problems and look for beautiful solutions means I am happy in what I do. This has given me a love of engineering and technology which helps to inform everything that I do. I always look for clear and simple approaches to the complexity of any issue within a project to get to the core and essential elements of the design.I am a Senior Architect as part of the Architecture team in New York with over 15 years of professional experience acquired in four countries, as well as local experience working on station rehabilitation projects for Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit. I bring international project experience and I am a chartered Architect in the UK and Spain.Since joining Arup, through my involvement in designing and delivering several metro and rail projects in Design and Build contracts, I have gained a holistic knowledge of public transport, including civil works, transportation systems, and station planning.Owing to these 15 years’ professional experience and my collaborations with the specialist in-house technical team at Arup, I strengthened multidisciplinary skills that provide me with a wider view of design integration within the building services.I have worked closely with multiple transportation agencies, planning and executing transportation projects, navigating complex technical requirements, safety regulations, and environmental considerations, while balancing design aspirations with budgetary constraints.I have engaged with local residents, advocacy groups, and elected officials to address concerns and ensure inclusiveness, taking into account the long-term implications of designs on communities and the environment. My interests include architecture, design, landscape and urban planning. I am passionate about visiting sites to understand the unique historical, cultural, socio-economic and geographical influences, as well as specific requirements of clients and users. It is this depth of engagement which inspires my work.I am particularly interested in the Architecture of New York, the way that New York works, its planning, development, and its uniqueness as a world city.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II (BSVII), Contract Package 2 (CP2)Lead Architect for the three underground stations and tunnel.BART is a rapid transit system serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California. BSVII is the largest single public infrastructure project ever constructed in Santa Clara County and will extend BART’s services an additional six miles from Berryessa Transit Center to the City of Santa Clara. BART awarded KSTJV the contract to perform the first stage of progressive design build services and we have teamed with Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering (KIE) as the Design Partner. Our scope includes end-to-end tunnel, geotechnical, and structural engineering, and multidisciplinary design of the largest diameter single-bored TBM rail tunnel in the world. The tunnel includes the complex engineering of a bridge-type track structure and three underground stations that are uniquely located directly within the tunnel, all within a highly seismically active area of California. BSVII is the first Progressive-Design-Build transportation project for a US metropolitan area, requiring supplemental collaboration and transparency in our work processes and decision making.Pablo is the Lead Architect for the three stations and tunnel, leading a team of 8 architects across three Arup offices. He coordinates the production of architectural drawings, technical aspects of the project and reports, and oversees architectural specifications. He manages the coordinating of the ASMEP with in-house engineers and consultants, and coordination with Client and Contractor.
