ABOUT PHILIP A.

I\'m an epidemiologist and public health informatician, passionate about creative and cross-disciplinary ways to enhance public health practice and capacity. With over 20 years of experience in the health domain, I currently lead and manage an interdisciplinary team within WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme. My unit - the Intelligence Innovation and Integration unit at the World Health Organization’s Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin - builds and strengthens public health intelligence capacity around the world through cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives, including the world’s foremost open-source intelligence platform and community for public health, the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) initiative. I was also part of the team that conceived and designed the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence. Our work bridges continents, disciplines and sectors, driving forward the integration of public health and technology to better prevent and respond to health crises. Prior to joining WHO, I co-directed the Canadian Field Epidemiology Program and worked extensively with public health surveillance, spatial epidemiology and the Global Public Health Intelligence Network (GPHIN) at the Public Health Agency of Canada. My work has almost always been in the context of emergency preparedness and response activities…including trying to raise two young (mostly adorable) children with my lovely wife from down under. I hold a PhD in Public Health Informatics awarded jointly by the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter in the UK, as well as a Master of Health Science (MHSc) in Epidemiology and Community Health and an Honours BSc with a specialization in Human Biology, both from the University of Toronto, Canada.
