ABOUT OWEN FREED
As a science communicator at the University of Washington, I rely on my lifelong sense of curiosity and a scientific education by way of the liberal arts to understand and explain cutting-edge research to the public. I\'m resourceful, a fast learner, and good at connecting the dots, and I enjoy finding elegant solutions to cross-cutting challenges. In my main role, I support the UW Clean Energy Institute and its Washington Clean Energy Testbeds, where I\'ve been able to exercise and strengthen my passion for clean energy, climate technologies, and policies that stimulate innovation and accelerate deployment. While I spend the largest fraction of my time writing and editing news stories, marketing materials and research reports, and social media content, I regularly wield and refine my skills in photography, graphic design, website management, and strategic program development. During my time at the UW, I\'ve provided similar communications support to the QuantumX Initiative, Molecular Engineering & Sciences Institute, Institute for Nano-engineered Systems, and Freshwater Initiative at various intervals. I’ve previously worked in Amazon’s packaging test lab, Totokaelo’s fashion photography studio, and as a sports coach. At Carleton College, I majored in chemistry with healthy supplements of the social sciences and humanities. In my spare time, I’m likely playing ultimate frisbee, losing myself in science fiction, or spending time with my family and friends.
