ABOUT OWEN ANGUS-YAMADA
When I was a kid, I said I wanted to be an engineer. I worked hard in school but when I was accepted into Engineering at McMaster, I wasn\'t excited. Why? Well, it turns out I said one thing but did another. My interests were never with physical problems, but rather with \'people problems\' and our mix of rational and irrational behaviours - like my proclamation of wanting to be an engineer. Now, I am finally excited about what I want to become. My goal is to become a market researcher and people advisor that helps organizations better understand their customers and employees.I graduated from Goodman\'s Master of Science in Management program at Brock University with a thesis that focuses on hiring decision-making. One thing I have learned from my academic journey is the power and importance of data. Without data, we can rely too heavily on quick-to-form assumptions to guide our decisions and behaviours. In many ways this is problematic, and I strive to always leverage data where possible to form insights. Along with my studies, I have strong presentation and critical thinking skills. I developed these skills through multiple business competitions, starting back when I was an undergraduate in business (Honors B. Comm) at McMaster. I loved the challenge of thinking through complex problems organizations faced, brainstorming solutions, and effectively communicating recommendations that often involve a behavioural component as per my interests. As a result, I have represented my universities in (and won!) many national and international competitions, including JDCC and the John Molson MBA Case Competition during my undergraduate (McMaster) and graduate (Brock) studies. I am driven by challenges and interests. In many ways, these two drives intersect as I often reflect to think about my own behaviours (i.e. decision-making and routines) when I am faced with a challenge, or as I like to call them, adventures. I believe the result is a growing list of accomplishments, such as placing 1st in the International Business Simulation Competition in California, running an ultra-marathon in the Rocky Mountains, and being awarded the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
