About Owain Smith

Incoming senior at Indiana University majoring in Computer Science with a specialization in Cybersecurity and minors in Business and Math. I bring four years of technical experience, having proficiency in technical areas such as software engineering and cybersecurity frameworks, along with a strong understanding of business operations and strategy. My work reflects a proven track record of leadership and communication, flexible adaptability, and hard-work, which has earned me a position on the Deans list and as a member of the Hutton Honors College. Through my coursework, I\'ve developed a strong foundation in programming languages such as Python, Java, C, SQL, and JavaScript, as well as web development skills in HTML. Primarily working in Unix, I\'ve also become familiar with using virtual machines, containerization using Docker, and building web applications. Some of my most recent projects in my courses have given me experience building my own operating system, developing protections against SQL Injection and data poisoning attacks, and applying mathematical concepts in computer science contexts. To support my technical background, I\'ve taken up a minor in business from the Kelley School of Business, which I hope will support me to apply my technical skills in the context of broader organizations. Currently, I am interning as a cybersecurity consultant at FTI Consulting in New York, where I am learning how to assess cybersecurity policies and use forensic tools to analyze and recover data from devices. In the past, I have interned for Mingma, a small consulting firm based out of Philadelphia, which aims to help businesses optimize their financials and restructure their organization by offering fractional CFO and COO services. In this role, I led client acquisition and marketing efforts, as well as helped successfully manage risk through implementing cybersecurity plans and frameworks. Furthermore, I have used my knowledge of web development and coding languages to support local non-profits by designing and implementing websites, leading to direct increases in donations and publicity.
