ABOUT BRUCE OVBIAGELE

I am an organization founder, academic leader, physician-scientist, educator, mentor, journal editor, book editor, conference organizer, and scientific spokesperson, with an unwavering commitment to “leave no brain behind” by working to address global inequities/disparities in brain care and brain health. I am board certified in general neurology and vascular neurology, and serve as Associate Dean at the University of California, San Francisco, being the primary leadership liaison between the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SFVAHCS) and UCSF, overseeing the teaching of the one-third of UCSF medical students, residents, and fellows who rotate through SFVAHCS, and supporting acquisition of new knowledge via research conducted by UCSF faculty members who work in the SFVAHCS.I lead several research and training programs funded by the National Institutes of Health, have published >700 peer review articles, and edited 6 textbooks. My work has been recognized with the Pessin and Wartenberg Awards from the American Academy of Neurology, Feinberg and Stroke Council Awards from the American Stroke Association, Penn Award from the American Neurological Association, Haddock International Impact and Distinguished Scientist Awards from the American Heart Association, Scientific Breakthrough and Mridha Awards from the American Brain Foundation, Meritorious Achievement Award from the National Medical Association, Lester-Henry Award from the American College of Physicians, and Award for Services to Stroke from the World Stroke Organization. I serve as Founder/President of the Society for Equity Neuroscience and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA). I founded and chaired the annual Health Equity and Actionable Disparities in Stroke: Understanding and Problem-Solving (HEADS-UP) Symposium and the African Stroke Organization Conference (ASOC). I chaired the International Stroke Conference (20••••18).It is my privilege to be an elected member of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, Association of American Physicians, and National Academy of Medicine; as well as an elected fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, International Science Council, World Stroke Organization, Society for Equity Neuroscience, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American College of Physicians, American Neurological Association, American Heart Association, Royal College of Physicians, and African Academy of Science. I serve on the Board of Directors of the World Stroke Organization.
