As the Lapis curator of Art of the Americas I establish priorities for collections research, acquisition, exhibition development, installation, interpretive strategies, conservation, and programming. Additionally, I participate in a full range of scholarly and public programming activities, as well as in the cultivation and stewardship of collectors and donors. Our collection holdings at NOMA include objects from Central and South America and the Caribbean by artists from many cultures, spanning a period of over 2,500 years. This broad collection includes Art of the the Ancient Americas, Art from the Spanish AMerican viceroyalties, and modern and contemporary Latin American & Latin X art. Among the strengths of the NOMA’s holdings is the collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, produced during the Spanish viceregal period. Works of art from the major Mesoamerican cultures are also a collection focus. The most important duties in this role include research, interpretation, and re-presentation of this material, as well as the ability to grow the scope of the collection into the 20th and 21st centuries. I also partner with regional, national, and international colleagues in the field and serve as a resource for sharing information about the ethics of collecting and repatriation.
