ABOUT OMAR RAHMAN

I currently work in the Physicochemical Analysis group within Discovery Analytical, which is accountable for providing PhysChem data and consultation to allow an early assessment of a molecule’s absorption and distribution in the body. By utilising a diverse array of analytical tools, the PhysChem analysis group measure and derive a range of physicochemical properties during the early phases of GSK’s drug discovery projects. Physchem properties are on the critical path to guide Medicinal Chemistry campaigns in the design and selection of compounds on their journey to becoming novel medicines. My responsibilities include performing high throughput routine assays on lipophilicity, solubility and biomimetic binding (including equipment maintenance and troubleshooting), and analysing chromatographic data regarding lipophilicity, binding and solubility, for trends and anomalies. As well as PhysChem, my role also involves Quality Assurance testing of all internally synthesised and externally purchased compounds entering the GSK Compound Collection via LCMS, providing an initial baseline for purity and confirmed identity.
