About Omar Khoury

I like to think I am not your typical law school student, nor will I be your typical attorney. I am driven, ambitious and inquisitive, but that is not what sets me apart. I am accomplished, having worked in more than a dozen positions that have given me experience in trial law, research, legislation, lobbying, immigration, human rights, public policy, public speaking and much more. However, that also is not what makes me unique. I am creative and passionate, a self-published writer of poems, novellas, and short stories with a love of astronomy and traveling. I chose the legal profession because of some personal experiences that showed me the power the law can have in the lives of people like me. I was born in Jordan to Palestinian parents and came to the United States when I was eight, growing up as an Arab-American in post-9/11 America. I developed an interest in international law and a desire to work with refugees and asylum seekers. Then came the 2020 election. I mailed my absentee ballot more than two weeks before Election Day, but it was rejected as late. I spent three months working my way through the bureaucracy of the USPS, eventually receiving an apology for the fact that my ballot had somehow gotten lost between Pennsylvania and Ohio. That feeling of disenfranchisement underscored my interest in Constitutional law. My time at the University of Pennsylvania and the various outside positions I’ve held have built on these life experiences. I have honed my critical thinking and decision-making skills, become adept at independent research, found my voice as an oral advocate, and learned how to use policy to protect people as well as their culture and artifacts. I have put my writing skills to work in drafting legislation, legal arguments, and policy papers. I would say, however, that what I really excelled at in every job was connecting with others, relating to their life experiences, conversing with them, and receiving their wisdom. Many of my former employers and co-workers have told me that I am older than my years. One of the things of which I am most proud is having made genuine connections that lasted beyond employment. All of this has prepared me well for the next step in my career, and I am ready to make a difference in a position of consequence.
