About Omar J. Powell

I pride myself on being an inclusion advocate and a leader within the insurance industry. Prior to my time at Sompo, I started my insurance journey as an Underwriter in the Retail Property department at AIG. Outside of my day to day responsibilities, I served as the Programming Chair for the Black Professionals & Allies Employee Resource Group and contributed regularly to the University Relations team. I found ways through my full-time work to stay committed to my university community and diversity & inclusion efforts within the insurance industry. During undergrad, I served as Howard University’s chapter President of Gamma Iota Sigma, the international risk management, insurance, and actuarial science fraternity. On the national level of GIS, I created Gamma Iota Sigma’s center of expertise on diversity and inclusion, formally known as GammaS.A.I.D.(Solutions for Authenticity, Inclusion, & Diversity) and had the opportunity to present at the 2016 Llyod’s of London Dive-In Festival in Columbus, Ohio. I maintain my connection to insurance at Howard University by continuing to serve as a member of the Howard University Center for Insurance Education Advisory Board. Having the opportunity to advance the curriculum of the actuarial science and risk management and insurance programs, expand and enrich opportunities for insurance students, and to plan the annual Finance, Insurance and Risk Management Symposium are some of my greatest highlights in being apart of the advisory board. I have been recognized for my work by Howard University as a two-time Maximillian Wallach Most Outstanding Student Award Recipient. On a national level, I was the 2016 recipient of the National African-American Insurance Association’s Jerald L. Tillman Endowed Scholarship, the 2016 Gamma Iota Sigma Warren L. Weeks Leadership Award and 2016 Griffith Education Foundation’s Elizabeth A. Kocur Scholarship. I\'ve taken my love for D&I and insurance internationally as well by being recognized as a Young AfricanA Leadership Initiative (YAALI) Fellow and traveling to South Africa to explore the regulatory environment and its impacts on various demographics within the country. In any of my pursuits, I keep in mind that “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
