About Olivia Stovicek
I’m an editor, researcher, and organizer in Chicago who uses seeking and sharing knowledge—and building relationships—to work for justice. I have interests and experience in community-focused journalism, climate change, and criminal justice and seek to make use of those strengths, as well as my skills in coaching, writing and editing, and strategic planning. In my research and reporting, I’ve contributed to the search for a universal flu vaccine, co-written Cook County’s only in-depth election guide to more than 100 candidates for judge, and directed rapid-response coverage to the COVID-19 pandemic for South Siders. I’ve used my ability to connect the details to the big picture to build structures to do that work justly and well, as when I started the South Side Weekly’s first fact-checking team. Throughout, I’ve interrogated the harmful position of objectivity in both science and journalism—I facilitated a reading group for journalists on the myth of objectivity for several years—and sought to work for our collective liberation.
