ABOUT OLINA BANERJI
An award-winning journalist and writer, I have spent the last ten years in international newsrooms and global non-profits, telling stories close to my heart. I’m skilled at crafting narratives, reporting from the ground and building a robust audience for my brand of story-telling. I have experience in launching new, subscription-based editorial products; creating a growth strategy and mentoring teams; building connections with internal and external stakeholders.Over the last five years, I built and led The Ken’s editorial coverage on education. My stories have straddled the reporting middle ground between tech, business and social impact. The Ken’s newsroom was the first globally to break the news of unfair and predatory lending/selling practices of edtech giants in India, and demand more transparency and accountability from the Indian education system. I have written over 100 in-depth, long form stories at The Ken, which have reached an audience of over subscribers, including policy-makers in the Indian Parliament, who have used my stories as a basis to demand closer scrutiny of how edtechs operate in India. I also launched Ed Set Go, India’s only weekly newsletter on education, where I cover the latest happenings in global education.I have written for a number of Indian media outlets (The Wire, Hindustan Times, India Today, Time Out), and have experience in different kinds of story-telling formats—print, visual and audio. I have a keen grasp of the latest debates in education, learning and the future of work, and have also reported on healthcare and climate change issues. My reports on India’s stalled Gigafactory ambitions won the Polestar Award for “Best Business Feature” in 2019. My experience spans two sectors I am passionate about: journalism and social change. I spent six years at the international non-profit Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, where I led the communications strategy efforts for the India office. I traveled across the country to evaluate projects and select and support the most promising social entrepreneurs. I worked with Ashoka Fellows to amplify their message and find ways to expand their reach. If you would like to commission a piece/reach out for strategic comms advice/just connect and chat, DM me or Tweet @ me: https://twitter.com/OBanerji
