When I was 25, my family handed me a crisis.Our family had been the largest investor in a company that collapsed through suspected management fraud. The family lands had been used as loan collateral. Between banks unwilling to restructure, multi-jurisdictional legal chaos, and fractured family relationships, I spent three years managing the forced sale of our forest and Schloss Riegersburg — assets that had been in our family for generations. The family imploded in the process.Harvard Business School turned it into a case study.\"Burning the Sails to Save the Ship: The Pilati Family Dilemma.\" I have since co-authored three further HBS cases on family governance and conflict with Professor Lauren Cohen, and present in HBS executive education programs.I am an aristocrat from a dynasty — Austro-Hungarian/German on my father\'s side, Italian on my mother\'s. I manage our remaining family estates, including Castle Hardegg in Lower Austria. I was diagnosed with AuDHD in 2024, which explained a great deal about growing up as an heir in a high-pressure family system.That crisis is why I founded The Antifragile Family® — a consulting practice for high net worth families who want to build governance systems, leadership structures, and heir education frameworks that survive shocks rather than shatter under them.My work is grounded in the Five Family Capitals and my THRIVE Framework.
