WORK HISTORY
Expert Cybersecurity Engineer @Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies Llc
Christchurch, NZ
Back in the late 90\'s I worked on one of the early machine guidance/control systems, a product from Trimble called \"BenchGuide\". After more than 25 years (with a lot of product + security roles behind me), I\'m now diving back into this world, working in the Systems Engineering team for the Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies group.I\'ll be using all of my re-world experience delivering pragmatic solutions. It sounds a bit cliche to say \"This is the role I\'ve been training for my whole life\", but I seriously believe the combination of product + system engineering experiences along with the broad experiences I\'ve had building, defending and securing systems will all come together in this new role.I expect to be visiting different parts of the world again and look forward to accelerating the security program for my new team.
EDUCATION
University of Otago
Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com. Hons) Information Science, Information Science / Computer Security
ABOUT NIGEL HANSON
I’ve spent 20+ years within the Trimble family, and my role at Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies (CTCT) feels like a full-circle moment. In the mid-90s, I helped develop some of the world\'s first machine guidance systems. Today, I am an Expert Cybersecurity Engineer ensuring those same systems—and the autonomous machines of the future—are resilient against modern threats. The landscape is changing rapidly. I am currently focused on the practical application of the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and the heavy machinery-specific ISO 24882. These aren\'t just \"check-box\" exercises for me; they are the framework for how we protect the physical world through digital safety. What I’m working on:Operational Technology (OT): Building security programs for high-stakes machine control systems.SBOM Leadership: Scaling real-world SBOM work, advising platform builders, and voicing the customer\'s needs on the Mend.io Advisory Board.Security Research: Contributing to DigitalSafety.org and collaborating with the NZ security research community and serial entrepreneurs.I believe in pragmatic, built-in security. Whether it’s threat modeling or navigating complex international standards, my goal is to provide the safety and security that modern industry demands.
