As a public member with lived experience on 3 NIHR committees (Public Health Funding Committee, Health Tech Assessment Programme Oversight Committee and NIHR Academy Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (and occasionally co-opted on to others), I carry out the following duties:Review research briefs and proposals to identify the most important and impactful areas for research. Make recommendations on which research topics should be prioritised and potentially commissioned for funding. Critically evaluate research proposals submitted to Public Health Research for funding for feasibility, relevance and the extent of public and patient engagement being proposed and help to make recommendations on which projects should be awarded funding. I critically assess each proposal to ensure it represents value for money, quality and the right measures and interventions are being proposed.Assess suitable candidates for NIHR Academy Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship by reviewing applications and forming part of the interview panel.
