ABOUT NWANDO ACHEBE
NWANDO ACHEBE is a University Distinguished Professor, the Jack and Margaret Sweet Endowed Professor of History, and Associate Dean for Access, Faculty Development, and Strategic Implementation at Michigan State University. An accomplished, equity-minded, transformative change academic leader, she is a multi-award-winning scholar-advocate, historian, and educator.A 2022–23 ACE Fellow and 2022 HERS Leadership Fellow, Dr. Achebe is also co-director of the Christie and Chinua Achebe Foundation, co-CEO of Achebe Masterworks, LLC, editor-in-chief of the Journal of West African History, a member of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, and President of the African Studies Association.She is the author of six books and the recipient of prestigious grants and fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, Wenner-Gren, Woodrow Wilson Center, Fulbright-Hays, Ford Foundation, World Health Organization, and National Endowment for the Humanities.Dr. Achebe has delivered over 100 invited keynote addresses at conferences and professional gatherings across four continents. She has served as expert consultant and fact checker for The History Channel’s Roots miniseries, Netflix’s Queen Nzinga, and NPR’s The Kingdom Behind Glass. Her work and insights have been featured in documentaries, news programming, and podcasts on three continents, including NPR’s Throughline, History Channel’s Roots: A History Revealed and Roots: A New Vision; Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Things the British Stole; South Africa Broadcasting Corporation’s MorningLive; Nigerian Television Authority’s 15 Minutes Studio; and BBC’s Chinua Achebe: A Hero Returns, Witness: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and The History Hour.
