ABOUT NATASHA WILLIAMS

THE EXCELLENCE TAX™ Black professionals are not failing to thrive. They are thriving under conditions most of their colleagues never face. The emotional labour, identity suppression, and psychological cost of navigating predominantly white professional spaces is real, measurable, and damaging. I call it The Excellence Tax™. I am the Founder and Research Director of The Cost of Black Excellence Research Institute, an independent mixed-methods research initiative with over responses across the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. This is not corporate-funded research shaped by the institutions it critiques. It is independent, community-rooted, and built entirely on the voices of Black professionals. The Research I spent 14 years as a Managing Director in building surveying. I built a practice where well-being came first, where my team hit targets on a four-day work week and reduced complaints by 80%. And I still paid the tax. Daily racism brought me to the point of physical collapse. Three days in the hospital. A decision to close the company I had built and turn lived experience into evidence. What the research found confirmed what too many of us already know: 86% of Black professionals work harder than their colleagues just to be seen as competent. 87% suppress aspects of their identity to succeed professionally. 91% have considered leaving a role to protect their mental or emotional well-being. 62% report significant health impacts directly linked to their work environment. The Excellence Tax does not diminish with seniority. It compounds. The Work I work with organisations that are ready to move beyond diversity statements and into structural accountability. My work combines rigorous independent research with 14 years of senior leadership experience to give leaders an accurate picture of what discrimination actually costs, in talent, innovation, retention, and human health. This includes keynote speaking, organisational audits using the Excellence Tax™ framework, and advisory work for HR, DEI, and executive teams. The Vision Every organisation that loses Black talent pays the Excellence Tax. Most never realise it. I am building the evidence, the frameworks, and the tools to change that. If your organisation is ready to understand the real cost, I would welcome the conversation. costofblackexcellence.com | Calendly: calendly.com/blackexcellenceresearch/meetings-with-natasha
