SPEARED is a conceptual device intended to prevent astronaut deaths in the event of another Columbia-type disaster. When I lost a friend aboard Columbia\'s final voyage, I teamed with Arlan Andrews and Thomas Ligon of SIGMA, the science fiction think tank, to devise a system to protect astronauts. Thus was SPEARED born. A provisional patent was obtained from the US Patent Office in March 2013.We are currently in materials testing to determine appropriate candidates for prototype construction.
