About Niklas Östman
Partner specialized in technology, software and IP transactions and litigation, with globally unique experience from IP, software and tech commercialization projects, gained at prominent business roles in EU and USA. Prior to rejoining Roschier, Niklas was General Manager of IP Licensing at Microsoft in the USA, and before that Head of Patent Licensing at Nokia. Niklas has thus played a key role in creating and operating 2 IP monetization programs that rank among the top 3 in the world meaning, in practice, that he has negotiated (or otherwise played a key role in) licensing deals having brought in more than 24 billion EUR in profit during his involvement. On the tech and business side, he has broad experience from both the cellular (handsets & infra) and the software (app, on-prem and cloud) industries gained during the years spent in prominent roles in said industries. Previously, he has been a Visiting Lawyer at Quinn Emanuel\'s (the leading litigation law firm in the USA) L.A. office. Niklas has negotiated complex IP, software and tech transactions with all major car, software, consumer electronics and telecom companies across the US, EU, JP, CN, KR and TW. Niklas has led several global patent wars with up to 970 external lawyers involved in one of them. He has been involved in several thousand lawsuits across the EU (UK, DE, FR, IT, SP, AT, NL, SE, FI, NO etc.), the USA (TX, VA, CA, FL, WI, MI, NY, WA, DE and US ITC), South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Kenya and in China (Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai). He has also been involved in matters before the EU Commission, the US Department of Justice, the US Federal Trade Commission, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce as well as the Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese FTCs. He has also acted as a trial counsel in patent cases in Finland, obtaining landmark decisions on issues such as equivalence, availability of preliminary injunctions and patents for biochemical synthesis routes, as well as arbitrator in tech and commercial disputes.
