My research has included work on performance analysis (understanding applications’ sensitivity to cache and bandwidth sharing on real hardware) and profiling methods (quantitative data to characterize scalability bottlenecks for homogeneous data-parallel applications) for multicores. My thesis focuses on combining statistical cache modeling with virtualization to provide very fast (2 GIPS) full-system simulation rates for systems with large (> 512 MiB) caches. This approach combines the gem5 simulator with hardware virtualization and statistical cache modeling for near-native speed simulation and very low overhead cache warming. These advances enable rapid simulation turn-around for future memory hierarchies and hardware/software co-design.
