About Nishat Ruiter
What if the legal profession evolved not just to interpret the law, but to understand its human impact to think more critically, act more collaboratively, and lead with integrity? That question has guided much of my work from protecting ideas at TED to reimagining how lawyers learn, lead, and adapt in the age of AI.As General Counsel and Secretary of TED Conferences, I help shape the legal strategy for a global nonprofit that believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives, and ultimately, the world. My work spans brand protection, intellectual property, privacy, licensing, AI risk management, and compliance, ensuring TED’s creative mission is protected while enabling innovation and growth at scale. A key part of my focus is addressing the complex challenges of our time: safeguarding TED’s content from AI misuse, developing strategies for copyright ownership in the digital age, and engaging in policy advocacy to ensure that creativity and technology can coexist responsibly.I’ve practiced law for nearly 30 years across technology, finance, and creative industries, bringing both structure and imagination to complex challenges. Before joining TED, I served as Associate General Counsel at CA Technologies, leading our North American legal teams for sales licensing and advising on mergers, partnerships, and marketing strategies. Along the way, I’ve remained committed to building communities and frameworks that strengthen ethics, inclusion, and professional identity in the practice of law.Today, as founder of TEDLaw, we are exploring how to modernize legal education and professional training for lawyers. We’re developing a curriculum that blends storytelling, ethics, innovation, and the human skills lawyers need to thrive in the AI age. Together with a growing community of faculty, judges, general counsels, and practicing attorneys, we’re shaping a more values-driven and future-ready legal profession. In addition to my work at TED, I’ve been fortunate to serve in roles dedicated to education and community development. I served on the Board of International School Services, co-founded One Hillsborough, a grassroots initiative promoting inclusion and community building, and sit on the editorial board of the International In-House Counsel Journal. I was also honored to serve as the first Alumni in Residence at Widener Law School, where I hosted workshops on the future of legal education and the role of ethics, identity, and purpose in the practice of law.
Experience
General Counsel
Apr 2016 — Present
As General Counsel, I am part of a team that manages all legal issues concerning TED including licensing, partnerships, TM, brand protection, TED\'s code of conduct, data privacy, copyright, transactions, and all corporate legal matters. We do this through a combined approach of building meaningful contract templates, training the teams across the org of legal issues, and co-collaborating with the business as they develop new ways to spread ideas. We like to find ways to make our contracts understandable with less legalese, negotiate with transparency and honesty, and developing smart and meaningful ways to follow regulations such as truth in advertising, privacy regulations, and consumer rights.
