About Niraj Gusani
Dr. Gusani is Chief, Section of Surgical Oncology at the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center in Jacksonville, Florida. In this new role, he is helping to build a team devoted to the multidisciplinary care of all cancer patients in North Florida and beyond. His clinical practice involves oncologic surgery for gastrointestinal tract, hepato-pancreato-biliary, adrenal, skin, and soft tissue malignancies, with a primary focus on diseases of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, and upper GI tract. Dr. Gusani is formerly Professor with Tenure in the Departments of Surgery, Medicine, and Public Health Sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine (20••••20). He served as Director of the multidisciplinary Program for Liver, Pancreas, and Foregut Tumors, as well as the Co-Medical Director for Outpatient Services within the Penn State Cancer Institute and the Section of Surgical Oncology. His active current focus of research involves the role of physical activity and prehabilitation in the outcomes of patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery and in cancer survivors. Other research interests include epidemiology and patterns of care in gastrointestinal malignancies and the measurement of quality and costs of care in oncologic surgery. Dr. Gusani has authored or co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters and invited manuscripts. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Surgical Research (Social Media Editor), and the Annals of Surgical Oncology (Associate Editor, Multimedia & Social Media), and as a reviewer for multiple other surgical and oncology journals. He is active in the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). He has an active presence on Twitter (@NirajGusani) with over 12,500 followers and is a leader in helping surgeons & other medical professions learn to harness new media and social media for professional use and patient/professional education. He serves or has served on the executive committee for several Twitter-based social media medical education initiatives including the monthly #PancChat Pancreatic Cancer Chat forum.
