COPD and emphysema rival many common cancers in their prevalence and disease burden. I have been instrumental in overcoming the nihilism that surrounded emphysema palliation in Yorkshire and have built up a service, that has helped hundreds of patients over the last decade. I successfully negotiated a business plan and introduced endobronchial valves for the palliation of emphysema in Leeds in 2010. We were one of the first Thoracic Teams in the UK to adopt this innovative technique in emphysema palliation, which has since become mainstream around the world. I also founded the Regional Emphysema MDT in 2014. This serves a population of around 3 million in West and North Yorkshire. This has now well-established referral pathways. We have started an innovative ANP led virtual clinic (2019) for our referrals. This will enhance patient experience and reduce costs for the NHS.I set up and organized 5 successive annual Yorkshire Emphysema Symposiums until 2018. This has informed and enhanced our Clinical Service. This has now become a joint effort with other Thoracic colleagues in Yorkshire. With the help of multidisciplinary colleagues who share an interest in the management of COPD and Emphysema, I have set up a Yorkshire Emphysema Network which will standardize and enhance patient care in the region and also champion innovation, cooperation, and education in the management of Emphysema.I was a member of the Working Group for Lung Volume Reduction that led to NHSE national commissioning of LVR in 2021-22.
