ABOUT NIKHIL PALEKAR

As Vice Chair for Ambulatory Clinical Affairs, I oversee ambulatory clinical services and faculty affairs across all programs and locations within the Stony Brook Medicine Network, including Stony Brook University Hospital, Advances Specialty Care in Commack, Integrated Psychiatry Services, ACO/Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) programs, Eastern Long Island Hospital, and Southampton Hospital. As Vice-Chair, I support and guide faculty recruitment and retention, credentialing, professional development, and quality of clinical care. I also oversee clinical strategic planning and operations for our network wide, multidisciplinary teams.In my role as a geriatric neuropsychiatrist, I direct the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease (CEAD) and the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, mentoring junior attendings and APPs.As an academic educator, I direct the Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship program and director the curriculum for geriatric psychiatry residency training and supervision. As Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Neurology and Medicine, I have the opportunity to collaborate with exceptionally talented faculty across several departments and disciplines at Stony Brook Medicine and Stony Brook University.As a clinical researcher, I am principal investigator of the only Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s disease on Long Island, supported by New York State Department of Health grant and a principal and co-investigator on multiple research studies funded by National Institutes of Aging, Alzheimer’s Foundation of American and the Alzheimer’s Association. I am also a principal investigator for several industry sponsored clinical trials studying cutting edge treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.In 2016, I was the recipient of the prestigious Planetree – Physician of the Year Award for excellence in patient-centered care and on April 23rd, 2023, I was honored by the Brookhaven Township to have April 23rd named as Nikhil Palekar, MD Day. I am a board member of the Alzheimer’s Association, a member of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, and the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment. I am on the Advisory Medical Board for several pharmaceutical companies developing cutting-edge treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and Director the Alzheimer Clinical trials Program.As Director, Alzheimer Therapeutics Program, I was the first to prescribe novel anti-amyloid treatments to early stage Alzheimer’s patients on Long Island.
