About Nihar Paul

I am an Assistant Professor at the School of Climate Change and Sustainability at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, and a Guest Investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts, USA. I work in physical oceanography, with a research focus on understanding ocean dynamics and their role in climate variability.My research explores upper-ocean processes, near-inertial waves, ocean circulation, and air–sea interactions, particularly in the Indian Ocean. I combine observations, numerical modeling, and theoretical approaches to investigate how ocean processes influence mixing, energy pathways, and climate-relevant variability.I completed my Master of Technology and Doctoral studies from the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, where my work focused on ocean dynamics, specifically the \"Stirring and mixing driven by mesoscale eddies in the stratified Bay of Bengal\". My broader interests lie in improving our understanding of ocean–atmosphere interactions and their implications for regional climate change.I am also interested in mentoring students, interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing research at the intersection of ocean science and climate change.

Broadly, I am interested in mesoscale eddy dynamics, nonlinear dynamics in geophysical flows, air–sea interaction processes, submesoscale turbulence and internal waves, shallow-water systems, rotating and stratified turbulence, machine learning applications in oceanography, and ocean modelling.
