ABOUT NIGEL THORNTON

Over 25 years experience in the nuclear industry working on design and construction of nuclear facilities. Early experience gained with NNC in the construction of the main civil engineering associated with Heysham 2 nuclear power station. This was followed by 2 years working at Sellafield on the construction of THORP before joining Atkins to run framework contracts which Atkins held with Sellafield. Built the Atkins business in West Cumbria before moving into a strategic business development role within the nuclear business of Atkins. Gained considerable experience in bidding and negotiating contracts, both for Atkins and the ACKtiv JV in which Atkins has a 20% stake. Increasingly supporting Atkins objective of internationalising the nuclear business, including bidding for major projects in collaboration with european partners. Led the Atkins team in the successful bid to be Architect Engineer for the ITER fusion reactor in France in a 4 partner JV. This was followed by leading the negotiations with Assystem to form the n.triple.a JV, a business set up to deliver nuclear consultancy services to emerging nuclear nations. Relocated to USA in May 2012 to lead the development of a nuclear business for Atkins in USA. Returned from USA in 2018 having been instrumental in the creation of an 800 strong nuclear business through the acquisitions of Nuclear Safety Associates and Energy Solutions PP & T business. Lead the partnership with Spinchem, to deploy the Spinionic ion exchange technology into the nuclear market.
