ABOUT NICOLE LAZARUS

I work with people using the One Planet Living framework to turn their sustainability goals into practical action plans—whether that’s for a business, a community, or a new development. I don’t just review these plans at the start; I stay involved over the years, helping to track progress and celebrating successes along the way. One of the joys of my role is recommending truly inspiring, transformational projects for leadership recognition.This year I celebrated 27 years at Bioregional. From our Oxfordshire office in the NW Bicester Eco Town, I’ve been lucky to work across One Planet Living as well as with our Sustainable Business and Sustainable Places teams.I’ve also had the privilege of serving on the Board of the Oxfutures II programme, which invested millions (with ERDF funding and Low Carbon Hub leadership) to grow Oxfordshire’s low-carbon economy.Along the way, I’ve been honoured to be listed among Building Magazine’s Top 50 rising stars of sustainability (2012) and to be a finalist in the Outstanding Women in Construction Awards (2014).Before Bioregional: My journey started in civil engineering, where I helped deliver the Jubilee Line tunnel in London and several hydro dams. A big turning point came during the hard winter of 1995–96, when I joined the Newbury bypass tree protests. That experience shifted my path, and soon after I travelled to British Columbia, where I worked on a cattle ranch for two years—proudly winning first prize for alfalfa hay at the Rock Creek Fall Fair in 1997.
