About Nicole Gugliucci

Professor, astronomer, education researcher, maker-of-tiny-comets, and all around geek, Dr. Nicole Gugliucci has made it their mission to study and share the Universe. Known as the “NoisyAstronomer,” she earned a doctorate studying radio astronomy, focused on science education as a postdoc, and is an associate professor of physics in New Hampshire. In addition to teaching introductory and advanced physics and astronomy courses, Dr. Gugliucci mentors research students who build and maintain the Radio JOVE telescope on campus and who image potential long period binary star systems. Dr. Gugliucci gives talks on campus and with local groups about radio astronomy, citizen science, and the convergence of science and science fiction. At night, they might be found leading constellation tours and telescope observing sessions at the college’s observatory. They also assist in recruiting secondary education teachers from the ranks of the college’s STEM majors, train pre-service elementary teachers in science and engineering, and study the motivations of citizen scientists. They do hands-on astronomy activities with children and teachers, literally bringing the Universe into their grasp. Their science outreach has taken them to DragonCon, CONvergence, GeekGirlCon, and other events where they can interact through talks, demonstrations, and conversations with anyone with an interest in science. As a postdoctoral fellow at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Dr. Gugliucci worked as the informal education lead for the citizen science project CosmoQuest, giving presentations at conventions, star parties, and professional meetings on how people can get involved in current research. She earned her doctorate from the University of Virginia in 2012 building a radio telescope array as part of a global effort to detect hydrogen from the early Universe. She has been working with radio telescopes since 2003, having co-authored several peer reviewed scientific articles on the subject, and she continues to find ways to use radio astronomy to educate people in the various ways that astronomers study the Universe. At the University of Virginia, she spent countless nights observing the sky with students and the general public. She has been a science blogger for outlets such as Discovery Space News and Skepchick.
