ABOUT NICOLE VIVEIROS
Nicole Viveiros is a biochemist with a strong foundation in cancer research and a passion for advancing scientific understanding in oncology, ultimately contributing to improved therapies and patient outcomes. Her journey began with a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Madeira, where she developed laponite nanoformulations for the oral delivery of alendronate to treat osteoporosis. This early experience honed her skills in nanotechnology, spectroscopic techniques, and in vitro models. Nicole continued her academic pursuits with an MSc in Biochemistry at the University of Porto, carrying out her thesis work in the Cancer Biology & Epigenetics Group at IPO-Porto in collaboration with Kymab Ltd (a Sanofi company). Her project focused on immunoprofiling bladder cancer tissue samples using digital pathology and whole-slide image analysis, culminating in a first-author publication and contributing to potential advances in immunotherapy for bladder cancer. In 2022, Nicole was awarded a competitive research fellowship from the Northern Regional Centre of the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC-NRN) and joined the Hematopoiesis & Microenvironments Group at i3S, where she investigated the role of FLVCR1 in hepatocellular carcinoma. During this time, she actively contributed to the guidance of an MSc student and acquired an extensive technical skill set, including molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid extraction, RT-qPCR, Western Blot, etc), CRISPR-Cas9 genetic editing, in vitro functional assays and flow cytometry. She also gained experience in animal models, conducting in ovo experiments and in vivo studies in murine cancer models. Currently, in the Cancer Signaling and Metabolism Group at i3S, Nicole focuses on elucidating the genetic underpinnings of familial non-medullary thyroid cancer. Nicole has presented her research findings at national and international conferences, both as oral presentations and posters, earning prestigious recognition, including the Best Poster Award at the 1st Symposium on Iron Metabolism and Cancer. Beyond her research, Nicole is committed to scientific outreach and education. She has actively engaged with the public through events like the European Researchers\' Night and by leading workshops for high school students, in the scope of the i3S educational program (CIÊNCIA ET AL). For the past two years, Nicole has also coordinated the i3Sounds Choir, which allowed her to strengthen her organizational, communication and team-building skills, enabling her to foster collaboration and manage diverse group dynamics.
