About Nicole Thayer

After launching my early career in pharmaceutical and biomedical research for companies like Bayer, I transitioned into clinical work as an RN before assuming my current role overseeing quality of care, risk management, and patient safety efforts for MaineHealth. In this role, I have the opportunity to drive process improvements, mitigate risk, increase regulatory compliance, and elevate our patient quality of care across a large not-for-profit healthcare organization with numerous sites in Maine and New Hampshire. Examples of my highlights in my roles include: Developing an incident reporting tool by leveraging technology to automate multiple functions and enable real-time reporting to increase our ability to identify and mitigate risk occurrences by site, category, and individual. Designing system-level strategy and policy in response to regulatory changes, including project management from project inception through development and implementation of standard operating procedures as well as clinician and staff training. Developing comprehensive organizational approach to risk mitigation of workplace violence through developing the framework and resources for the management of disruptive patient behaviors. Designing and implementing organization approach to immunization program management by creating of new staff training and developing standard operating procedures to minimize variability and improve patient safety. Overhauling the certification process for the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) PCMH Recognition program and launching a project management tool to gather higher-quality data in less time. In addition to my hands-on work, I completed my MBA in Leadership from Saint Joseph’s College. Prior to that, I earned a BSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a BS in Biological Sciences from Carnegie Mellon. I also hold a certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Managment (CPHRM) from the American Hospital Association (AHA), and I am an active member of the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM).
