About Nicole Malofsky

As a young, emerging professional, my life has led me to a career in biomedical research. Specifically, my own mother’s battle with multiple diseases catalyzes my interest in multidisciplinary engineering that delivers meaningful, realistic, and lifechanging medical innovations. I’m accordingly working on multi-disciplinary engineering and commercial experiences from education and work perspectives. From pursuing biomedical engineering graduate degrees focused upon corneal implant manufacture and global health technologies to my Procter & Gamble skincare product evaluations, I’m striving to not simply become a research scientist, but a holistically experienced scientist whose capabilities and understanding extend beyond the lab – into actual people’s lives and the society to which we all belong. During my bioengineering masters, I worked diligently to develop biomaterial-based corneal implant technologies that eliminate the need for donor tissue. Such work can make dramatic life differences, allowing folks not just to see, but to enjoy life. I have recently been awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRF). My fellowship “recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students” in STEM fields. Over US students apply each year and only are awarded the fellowship.Starting Summer 2021, I began pursuing my biomedical engineering PhD as an NSF fellow at Vanderbilt University. In particular, I joined the Haselton Lab where I can diversify my research portfolio. Our group’s efforts accelerate the development of global health technologies in a multidisciplinary research environment addressing the needs of patients and physicians in resource-constrained settings. My project specifically aims to develop tuberculosis drug susceptibility screening diagnostics for resource-constrained settings. In the end, I’m working towards making tangible differences through diligent research, collaboration with colleagues, and deep connections with those I’m helping and the society they impact. I’m here to learn, discover, lead, teach, collaborate, and make a positive difference. Aside from my scientific endeavors, I enjoy training for half marathons and triathlons, cheering for the Cincinnati Bengals, cooking up crepes and eggplant parm, and spending time with my two kittens Violet and Olivia.
